Xi’an North High Speed Railway Station is one of the six comprehensivetransportation hubs in China, and one of Asia's largest high speed railwaystations.The station has four functional levels: the passenger waiting area atthe second floor with a retail mezzanine level, while the main structure of 550m long and 184 m wide. The platform level is at ground floor. The basementlevel 1 works as egress corridor, transfer hall and service space. Metro line 2is at basement 2 level.
Thestation locates at the northern end of central axis of the heritage city, 12 kmaway from the city center. As a most fully functional and modernized megatransportation hub in the west of China, this station offers high speedrailway, metro, coach and the other road traffic services with 34 platforms, 34rail tracks and gross floor area of 332,000 m2.
The station building mainly adopts frame structure:for the underground passage soleplate with elevation -11.600, adopt ordinaryconcrete structure jointly built by national railway and local railwaystructures, composed of foundation beam and anti floating soleplate. For theinter-line track beams with elevation -2.500, adopt two-way steel reinforcedconcrete composite beam and concrete filled steel tubular column framestructure. For the floor of line side station building with elevation ±0.000, adopt post tensioned prestressed concretestructure. For the floor with elevation 10.000 m, adopt concrete filled steeltubular column and steel truss structure. For mezzanine, adopt the steel frame structure. Steel structure floor are basically theprofiled steel sheet concrete non composite floors; the station building roofis in multi-point supporting spacelatticed structure which supported on the steelcolumn and slanted strut. The maximum span is 47.05 m × 66.5 m, and the largesttwo-way cantilever length is 21 m; the foundation of station building is postgrouting bored pile foundation.
The platform canopy is on the ground floor, where theinclined pull prestressed steel frame structure consisting of concrete filledsteel tubular columns, the steel frame beams and steel tie rods (as shown inFig. 1) is adopted in two directions, and a certain prestress is applied on thesteel tie rod, which is used as elastic fulcrum of the beam. The platformcanopy is located on both sides of the main station building, and the canopieson both sides are completely symmetrical. On either side, the length along thetrack direction is 114.0 m, with the main span of 23 m, and the length in thedirection perpendicular to the track is 402.38 m (setting a joint at N axis forseparation), with the main span of 43 m. The elevation of highest-pointstructure of the platform canopy is 19.500 m. For this project, the design ideathat the steel tie rods may move back under negative wind pressure is adoptedso as to reduce the adverse effect caused by excessive tension of the steel tierods

Xi’anNorth High Speed Railway Station is located at the northern end ofcentral axis of Xi'an city, i.e. convergence of city center axis Weiyang Road, the3rd Ring Road and the surrounding express way transport hub. As the birthplace of the Chinesecivilization and the original starting point of ancient Silk Road northboundline, Xi'an has three thousand years of city construction history. Xi'an is oneof the world's four ancient capitals of civilization (Xi'an, Rome, Cairo,Athens) and the ancient capital for 13 dynasties including Zhou Dynasty, QinDynasty, Han Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, with very thick cultural accumulation.Around Xi'an, there are more than 120 imperial mausoleums, so Xi'an enjoys a goodreputation of "natural history museum"; pit of terracotta warriorsand horses is praised as the “8th wonder of the world”; the mausoleumof Emperor Qinshihuang is Chinese relic first included in the world heritagelist; the ancient city wall, so far, is the world's most completely preservedand largest ancient city wall relic. The Client expects that Xi’anNorth High Speed Railway Station should notonly embody the historical context and regional culture of the ancient capital,but also become modern efficient and fast high speed railway station.
We take Tang-dynasty style and Han-dynasty charm toembody the essence of Chinese architecture, which is a kind of "simpleelegance, pretty magnificence". The ancient capital Xi'an carries thespirit of the golden age of Han and Tang Dynasties; the architectural form ofXi’an North High Speed Railway Station integrates elements of Hanyuan Hall ofDaming Palace in the Tang Dynasty and the ancient city wall of Xi'an, whichmakes the whole building simple and solemn, sublime and magnificent. The foldedplate grid steel roof not only has verve of big roof of Chinese traditionalarchitecture, and but also embodies the modern new type large-span structuraltechnology, and in this way, the perfect unification of historical context andmodern science and technology is accomplished.
The Client hopes that the building has not only thehistorical background, but also the modern nature of traffic building, andmeanwhile the cost should be relatively economic. Organic unification of thearchitectural form and the structure logic: the architectural form is shaped toembody not only the regional cultural characteristics, but also theauthenticity and rationality of structure stress. Acertain aesthetic rhythm is established by using the structural units, fullyadopting structural mechanics rules and mechanics principle, showing theaesthetics of building structure itself, enhancing the expression of detail image design, which isthe effective path for obtaining architectural artistic appeal. Theentire roofing system consists of 11 folded steel truss structure units, toform a beautiful arc ridge and form hip roof with long overhang eaves of “Chinesecharm in Tang and Han Dynasties” with two extended wings, which is a perfectcombination between modern new structural technology and historical context. Foreach roof unit, there is a fusiform skylight on the raised ridge in the middle,so together with fusiform sun shading louvers, it is availableto achieve good natural lighting and ventilation, and in this way, the sunshinepasses through the translucent skylight to form gorgeous shadow, producing theindoor space effect which makes passengers joyful, relaxed and comfortable. Thefine details of the tree-shaped steel column also show Chinese traditional woodstructure architectural features.
According to the Client¢s requirements, Xi’an North High Speed RailwayStation should be a large-scale comprehensive transport hub integrating thenational railway, subway, bus, taxi and other municipal traffic facilities, andwill be a super large comprehensive transport hub located on the Xi'an northcenter axis, with the most complete functions and highest degree ofmodernization in Western China. According to the information provided by therailway design units, scale of railway yard ranks the first in China and inAsia, consisting of 34 platforms and 34 rail tracks, expected to dispatch68,700,000 passengers/year, forwardreaching 82,600,000 passengers/year.
For such a large transport hub, how to solve allkinds of traffic flow problems is the most important matter. In terms offunction layout, we adopt the four-floor (2 floors on the ground and 2 floorsunderground) three-dimensional layout mode, where the 2 floors on the ground arefor passenger waiting area and commercial mezzanine, with body length of about550 m, width of 184 m; the ground floor is the platform floor; the basement 1is for exiting passages, transfer hall and equipment room; the basement 2 isfor metro line 2. For passenger flow line, we adopt the “up-in down-out” mode,which makes all kinds of flow lines in the railway station convenient, smoothand shortest, achieving the passenger "zero-distance transfer".
In order to achieve the efficient and convenientuser-friendly passenger traffic flow line organization, on the basement 1 ofstation building, there is a transfer hall which is also used as undergroundpedestrian passage of large underground transportation and commercialengineering connecting the south and north station squares of the railwaysstation, forming pedestrian vehicle three-dimensional shunt together with theground vehicle roads, no mutual interference.
